Qui-Gon Jinn was a revered, yet unconventional Human Jedi Master who was a student of the Living Force. When Jinn was young a Padawan, Jinn was mentored by Dooku, and later he became the mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jinn often put himself in conflict with the Jedi High Council. Despite the oppositions to the Jedi Order Council, he was deemed by many as sharp-witted and possessing great wisdom. Jinn served the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order his entire life, taking part against the Battle Droid occupation during the Invasion of Naboo. He was the one who discovered Anakin Skywalker, on Tatooine during this crisis and was largely responsible for supporting his to be trained as a Jedi. Even after his demise at the hands of Darth Maul, he played a vital role in the legacy and future of all Jedi.

Biography

Early Life

Qui-Gon Jinn was a Human born on the Republic's capital of Coruscant. As a Padawan in the Jedi Order, he was trained by a Jedi Master Dooku in the ways of the Force. Jinn went on to become a Jedi Master, one who'd developed an independent attitude towards the Jedi Order. He was viewed as a maverick Jedi, one who would disobey the Jedi Code if he felt it was a right decision. Qui-Gon Jinn took on an apprentice of his own, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who believed that Qui-Gon could have been made member of the Jedi High Council if he followed the Jedi Code. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan then spent a year on Mandalore during the civil war, protecting the Duchess Satine Kryze from insurgents and bounty hunters. He had at least some contact with his old Master after taking on Obi-Wan, and spoke highly of his gifted Jedi Padawan to former his master Count Dooku.

Sometime during his life, Jinn began discovering the secrets to manifesting his consciousness after he died. He traveled to a planet strong with the Force, a planet that legend said was the birthplace of life and the origin of the Midi-Chlorians. There, Jinn learned from Force Priestesses who had retained their own consciousness after dying. Qui-Gon Jinn learned that, when a living thing died, its life passed through the Living Force and into the Cosmic Force to become one with the Force. As the Living Force and Cosmic Force existed in tandem, it was possible to retain one's consciousness and then physically manifest themselves after death. Qui-Gon was deemed worthy of the knowledge of a eternal life, and secretly began his training to fully unlock its mysteries. Qui-Gon also learned from a Shaman of the Whills that achieving eternal consciousness required absolute selflessness. At some point, Grand Master Yoda rescued a young Force-Sensitive boy from pirates that had planned to sell him, and established contact with Jinn and Kenobi so the nearby Jedi could escort the infant to the Jedi Temple. Jinn expressed that he was happy to help out as they had been so close. Jinn had offered to join Yoda on his quest, but he said as he climbed into his ship that the Force disturbance was a calling for him alone.

Discoveries into the Force

Negotiations go Wrong

Ten years prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation blockaded and planned a Invasion of Naboo in retaliation for the Galactic Republic's taxation of trade routes in outlying star systems. Unknown to the Republic or Jedi, their Federation was controlled by Dark Sith-Lord Darth Sidious, who was publicly recognized as Senator Palpatine who engineered the conflict so he could be elected Supreme Chancellor. Then-Chancellor Finis Valorum dispatched Jinn and Kenobi to Naboo, tasking them with resolving the situation through diplomatic means. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, under the guise of Senate Ambassadors, were sent to negotiate with Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray. Unbeknownst to the Jedi that the Viceroy was secretly serving Sidious, he tries to kill the two. The Jedi escape and sneak onto a ship, ready to strike the planet, Naboo. On Naboo, several battle droids attack the jungle outside the city of Queen Amidala and the Jedi are caught in the middle of it. Qui-Gin Jinn saves the Gungan called Jar-Jar Binks and he becomes grateful for the deed. Qui-Gon Jinn has Jar Jar Binks take them to the Gungan city to speak with their high council. The Gungan leader, Boss Nass, refused to cooperate and hope Naboo will suffer. Under the mind control of the Force, Boss Nass then had offered transportation and "sells" Jar Jar to Jinn. The Jedi and Binks sneak in to city, rescue the Queen and flee Naboo.

Finding the Chosen One

A Federation warship damages their ship and everyone takes refuge on the planet Tatooine. Qui-Gon Jinn, Binks, R2-D2 and Padmé travel to the nearest town and find a mechanic shop. The shop is owned by a slave trader called Watto who owns the youthful Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi. Qui-Gon could not afford the repair parts and Anakin takes his new friends home with him. Anakin tells Qui-Gon that he could enter an upcoming podrace and use the prize money to buy the parts. Qui-Gon agrees and so does Watto and Qui-Gon senses something about the boy. The night before the race, he'd taken a sample of blood from Skywalker and sent it to Kenobi to be analyzed. The Midi-Chlorians within the blood were off the charts and if Anakin has Jedi blood in him, then he could be the Chosen One. Before the race, Qui-Gon raises the stakes and offers freedom for the Skywalkers if he wins. Watto agrees but only one could be freed, to which he chooses the boy. Anakin won the race, the parts are paid for and Anakin was now free. Qui-Gon told him he could be trained to be a Jedi. Anakin did not want to leave his mother behind but she makes him go. On way to the ship, the two are ambushed by Sith-Apprentice of Darth Sidious, Darth Maul. Anakin runs to the ship while he then dueled with Darth Maul. The match ends in a draw as Master Qui-Gon escapes onto the departing ship for Coruscant.

Death of Qui-Gon Jinn

The ship reaches Coruscant and Qui-Gon informs the council of his previous encounters. Jinn tells them the Sith have returned and maybe planning something big. He also tells Yoda and Mace Windu about Anakin and how he senses the Force in him and how powerful it is. The Council hesitantly agrees to examine Anakin and though they are impressed by his abilities, they conclude that he is too "dangerous" to be trained due to his age and internal conflict. Qui-Gon offers to train him, but is forbade to due to him already having a Padawan. Qui-Gon then says that Obi-Wan no longer needed training and is ready to be a Jedi Knight. Windu tells them that this all will be dealt later as he sends the three of him to assist the Queen in launching a counterstrike on the Trade Federation and to see if Maul will be there as well. They all return to Naboo and succeed in getting the Gungan army to fight for them. Jar Jar leads the Gungan against the droid army in the meadows, Anakin leads the starfighters in a space battle, the queen and her guards sneak into the palace and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are left to duel Darth Maul. Maul fights successfully, as he pushes Obi-Wan aside and duels Qui-Gon on his own. Obi-Wan became trapped temporarily and Qui-Gon was left to duel Maul to which Maul stabs him. Obi-Wan breaks free and duels Maul fiercely, to which he uses Qui-Gon Jinn's Lightsaber and slice Darth Maul in half.

Becoming a Force Spirit

After Obi-Wan defeated Darth Maul, he ran to his wounded master, cradling him in his arms, and Qui-Gon Jinn made his apprentice promise that he'd train Skywalker as a Jedi Knight. With his last breath, Qui-Gon once again said that Anakin was the Chosen One and would bring balance to the Force. In the aftermath of the battle, the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo was ended, Obi-Wan was granted the rank of a Knight and insisted on taking Anakin as his Padawan. Though Yoda disagreed, the Council approved Kenobi's request, fulfilling Jinn's dying wish that Skywalker would be trained as a Jedi. Later, Jinn was given a Jedi funeral on Naboo, where his body was burned on the funeral pyre. The funeral of Jinn was attended by a number of delegates including Queen Amidala, the Jedi Council, and Chancellor Palpatine. It was at the funeral that Kenobi told Skywalker that the Jedi Council would allow him to be trained, and that Kenobi would be his master. Together, the two mourned the death of their fallen friend, as Kenobi vowed that Skywalker would become Jedi. Though his training had been incomplete, Qui-Gon Jinn utilized what he learned from the Force Priestesses to become one with the Force and retain his individual identity after his physical death. The Master Qui-Gon hadn't fully learned the mysterious power, however, so he couldn't physically manifest himself, only speak as a disembodied voice to the living.

Speaking to the Living

The first known time that Qui-Gon communicated through the Force was shortly prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars. Skywalker returned to Tatooine to find his mother, about who he had been having recurring nightmares, and found that she had been kidnapped by Tusken Raiders. He found her in a Tusken camp, but she died only moments later. In anger, Skywalker had killed all Tuskens in the camp. Jinn, sensing the great pain and distress, called out to the Jedi Padawan through the Force, which Yoda could hear but couldn't comprehend through his meditations. Despite Qui-Gon's training not being complete, Jinn was able to physically manifest on one known occasion. Kenobi, Skywalker, and Anakin's Jedi Padawan, had been lured to the planet Mortis by three beings known as the FatherSon, and Daughter. Like Jinn, these beings believed that Skywalker was the Chosen One. Jinn first appeared to Obi-Wan to warn him that the beings sought Skywalker and his potential as the Chosen One, to use it for their own means. When Kenobi questioned how Jinn could appear, the late Jedi had told him that the planet acted as a amplifier, and that it was a conduit through which the Force flowed. The two spoke about Skywalker and his power, with Kenobi having the opportunity to tell Qui-Gon that the late Jedi's predictions about Skywalker were true in that he was stronger than any other Jedi, yet still could not find balance.

Jinn warned that, if Skywalker was the Chosen One, then the boy would discover it on Mortis, and if not then the planet would prove to be very dangerous for someone so powerful. Jinn later appeared to Skywalker himself, telling Skywalker that he still believed the boy would bring balance to the Force after facing his demons. After the three Jedi managed to escape Mortis, where the Father professed his belief that Skywalker was the Chosen One, Kenobi came to believe, and told the Jedi Council, that the appearance of Qui-Gon Jinn was simply a illusion, one manifested from their memories by the beings on Mortis. Skywalker, however, was not as confident, despite Jedi teachings saying that it was impossible for a being to retain their identity after death. The report about Mortis did not change these Jedi beliefs or teachings. It was not until the waning days of the Clone Wars that Yoda learned Jinn had retained his consciousness after death. Knowing Yoda was destined to be a major player in bringing balance to the Force, and that it was Yoda's destiny to complete the training Jinn himself did not, the late Jedi Master spoke to Yoda through the Force and guided him to Dagobah, the first leg on Yoda's trials to determine whether he was ready to learn the secrets. Jinn told Yoda about his training, and how the Living Force fed into the Cosmic Force, allowing him to return after the physical death of his body as a Force Spirit.

Yoda at first was only interested in the truth about the identity of the Lord Darth Sidious, but Jinn could only guide Yoda through his trials. Yoda was guided by the Living Force in the form of glowing swarm of fireflies. Later they guided Yoda to the planet of the Force Priestesses, where Yoda continued his trials. Yoda completed the trials and was deemed to be worthy of learning the secret of eternal consciousness, as Yoda would one day train the person who would help Anakin bring balance to the Force. The Force Priestesses instructed that Jinn would guide Yoda's training. After the end of the Clone Wars and the fall of the Jedi Order, Yoda chose to go into exile on Dagobah, but not before telling Obi-Wan that Jinn had returned from the netherworld of the Force and could guide his former Padawan in learning the secret. During Obi-Wan Kenobi's self-imposed exile on Tatooine, he frequently dwelled upon his failure to train Anakin, and one such time during meditation he felt himself phase out of reality for a few moments. During this time he felt Qui-Gon commune through the Force with him, with his old Jedi Master telling him to let go. In the years after the Clone Wars, Kenobi and Yoda both completed their training to retain their consciousness after death. It was on Dagobah that Yoda fulfilled the destiny first spoken of by the Force Priestesses, training the son of Anakin, Luke Skywalker to become last of the Jedi.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

The Force: Like other Jedi, Qui-Gon was sensitive to and had an affinity for the Force. He had displayed a considerable skill set when utilizing telekinesis and Force mind tricks on more than one occasion, using them to help further his goals during the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo and while attempting to free Skywalker from slavery. A philosophical warrior, Qui-Gon Jinn believed heavily in what he referred to as the "Living Force", a method of focusing on the moment rather than contemplating the Force in all its degrees. It's been suggested that an ability such as this would have helped in stopping Palpatine's rise to power; as the Jedi focused on the Separatist threat to the future of the Galactic Republic, they failed to examine the moment more closely. The ability to manifest consciousness after death was, for a time, a skill that other Jedi did not know. Jinn kept his training with the Force Priestesses secret, and the Jedi still continued to hold belief that death was permanent and identity could not be retained. It was not until towards the Clone Wars that Jinn did reveal himself to Yoda, despite his training being incomplete, and Qui-Gon told the Grand Master that he too could learn to return from death through the Cosmic Force. Jinn passed these teachings on to Yoda and Obi-Wan, who used it and the new philosophies they learned to help guide the young Luke Skywalker towards his destiny of being the Jedi Knight.

Abilities

Lightsaber Skills: Jinn was one of the finest swordsman in the Order, having frequent sparring experience with many of his skilled contemporaries such as his mentor, Count Dooku, and fellow Jedi Mace Windu. Qui-Gon was a master of the fourth form of Jedi Lightsaber combat. In combat, his bladework was wide and powerful, marked by heavy, two-handed slashes and sudden flourishes to cover his flanks. Jinn's skills with Form IV was such that he could easily defeat blaster-wielding opponents despite the form's weakness to blaster fire. Rather than engaging in the energetic acrobatics typical of most Ataru specialists, Jinn, at least in later years, tended to stay grounded during Lightsaber duels. That being said, he remained fully capable of utilizing acrobatic attacks and maneuvers during combat. Master Jinn was also capable of effectively employing unarmed combat strikes into his Lightsaber sequences. However, Qui-Gon Jinn was not without a weakness. In his elder years, Jinn's strength and physical ability began to diminish from age, and his primary edge was derived from his experience and intuition rather than from his physical attributes. Despite his mastery of Ataru, Jinn was still prey to some of the form's flaws, namely the weak defense and the lack of effectiveness in confined spaces. All his weaknesses came into play in his last duel with Darth Maul, as the Sith out-fought the Jedi and mortally wounded him.

Equipment

Weapons

Qui-Gon's Lightsaber: This green-bladed Lightsaber was wielded by the Human male Jedi Master Qui-Gon. Jinn used this Lightsaber up until the Battle of Naboo, where he was mortally wounded by the Sith-Lord Darth Maul. After Jinn had been impaled by Maul's Lightsaber, Kenobi and Maul fought one-on-one. When Kenobi lost his own Lightsaber, he used the force to call Jinn's saber, using it to bisect Maul. After Kenobi defeated Maul and left him for dead, Jinn died. Kenobi would be without a weapon following the duel on Naboo, as his own was destroyed. As a result of this, Kenobi did take possession of his master's Lightsaber, using it as his temporary Lightsaber until Obi-Wan constructed a new Lightsaber identical to his first one that had been lost in the duel with Maul. What happened to the weapon afterwards is unknown, however it is possible that after Obi-Wan had no need of the Lightsaber any longer that he passed it on to another Jedi.
